Generally, I am a huge proponent of the “Make” movement but the movement does have its problems.
At one end of the spectrum, there are times when hacking things turns out to be little more than something ridiculous. My current whipping boy is the fantasy maker sub-genre called “steampunk.” Basically, they take working technology and devolve it into some backwards version of itself. This serves no purpose other than to say “look how cool that is.”
And then there’s makers who really know what they are doing, but they are frikin insane. For example, some smart kids made a Frankenruxpin that, when set next to a computer running Twitter, will talk out all of your twitter messages.
No thanks, that’s just creepy.
