In this cultural climate, where funding for new library buildings can be difficult to find, I find inspiration in stories like the one about UA professor Soyeon Shim. She found a way to get 2,000 donors to give $24m so that her department could have a new academic building at the UA.
Ok, to be fair, she is chair of the John and Doris Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences and her alumni are placed at the world’s richest corporations as buyers, retail scientists, and the like. But come on! Why can’t the UW Tacoma have the “Starbucks Information Commons” or the “Microsoft Vista Computer Lounge?”
Think big, people!
